Arlington Stream Monitoring Program
The Environmental Planning Office of Arlington County has initiated a stream monitoring program within Arlington County to Quarterly monitor the health of our streams. This monitoring is performed by a team of volunteers that live in the area, and have completed training by the Audubon Naturalist Society. The County has selected fifteen locations for monitoring, and both Donaldson Run and Gulf Branch streams are included in this list. The following article appeared in the Washington Post, Nov. 14, 2001:
It was this team of volunteers that discovered the chemical contamination from the Washington Golf and Country Club that resulted in the accidental stream kill that occurred in August.
If you are interested in volunteering for this effort, you must first complete a Macroinvertebrate identification course (which is free). The Audubon Nature Society regularly offers these courses, so that a common protocol or standard of monitoring is used consistently throughout the area. To request information about the monitoring program, or the date and location of the next free course, please contact Aileen Winquist, Environmental Planning Office, 703 228-3610.
