Much of the information to follow, was copied from "Arlington Heritage, Vignettes of a Virginia County", by Eleanor Lee Templeman, privately published by the author, 1959.
Ms. Templeman was a resident of Bellevue Forest, and her wonderful book highlights many of the more fascinating subjects of our community's history. Her short "vignettes" cover many topics. She discusses the History of Chain Bridge, as well as a discussion of the Chain Bridge during the Civil War. There is a section on Little Italy, and the Quarry men that worked there. Another section on Roberts Lane homes, and also on the Donaldson Family.
We also have several registered Historic locations within our community.
Glenmore, built in 1906, is at 3440 N. Roberts Lane
Robert Walker House, built in 1871, is at 3608 N. Military Road
Horatio Reid House, built in 1890, is at 3575 N. Roberts Lane
Aunt Nancy's Spring, located in Gulf Branch Park
and although not within our borders, Bellevue (our namesake), built in 1870, is at 3311 N. Glebe Road
Below you will find some photos from Mrs. Templeman's book.
Glenmore, under construction, built in 1906 by the Roberts Family, is shown above.
Our Holly Tree. Back in 1959 the community was amazed at the age and size of this tree.
The Horatio Reid house, built in 1890, has been incorporated into the 1946 house you see below.
This picture of a Bellevue Forest backyard was presented in Mrs. Templeman's book to highlight the beautiful wilderness that has been preserved in our community.
